Why People are Choosing Herbal Remedies Over Traditional Medications

Recent studies show that medication side-effects results in the 4th largest number of deaths among both adults and children. There are also thousands of people who are admitted to hospitals each year suffering from the side-effects of medications who survive their illness. These are not people who are abusing prescription drugs, but rather people who are taking these medications as advised for various health conditions.

With more and more people dying from so called traditional medications that are supposed to keeping them healthy it is no wonder more and more people are choosing herbal remedies over traditional medications for the treatment of a variety of disorders. However, when one considers the nature of herbal remedies and how long they have been around then it is seems that it should be the herbal remedies that are considered to be the traditional medicines and the man made medications that should be considered alternative medicine.

Long before the formal practice of medicine, people were treated with herbal remedies for a variety of illnesses and medical problems. While herbal medicine didn't cure all human woes many of these treatments were quite successful in keeping people healthy. In fact, many cultures today use a combination of old herbal remedies and newer medications in treating a number of diseases. It is only in the Western world where scientist and most medical practitioners have shunned herbal treatments as "ineffective" or "dangerous" but with the growing concern over the negative side-effects of prescription and even over the counter medications even some of today's medical professionals are turning to herbal remedies to treat at least some minor medical conditions.

Of course most people have at least some knowledge of home remedies and herbal treatments as each family has at least one or two treatments that have been passed down from generation to generation. These treatments may be something quite simple such as adding ginger to tea to calm an upset stomach or using an aloe plant to ease bee stings or soothe sunburns. Since these herbal remedies have proven effective now more and more people find themselves searching for herbal remedies to treat a variety of problems from dry skin to arthritis and even more serious medical problems.

While no would advise avoiding your doctor or quitting that prescription medication that is treating a serious condition such as diabetes or heart disease most people would agree that finding a herbal treatment for non life-threatening diseases and problems may actually help you live a longer and healthier life.
